Theresa Ann Cavallaro, D.V.M.

Co-Medical Director and Founding Partner

Dr. Cavallaro is a 1992 graduate of Mississippi State University. She was the recipient of the President Scholar Award for Excellence in Academic Achievement for two consecutive years.

Dr. Cavallaro was formerly the Medical Director of South Shore Veterinary Practice from 1995 until she moved her rapidly growing practice to the larger, state-of-the-art facilities of Bay St. Animal Hospital in 2002.

Dr. Cavallaro is considered by her professional peers as an extraordinarily gifted veterinarian. Her genuinely heartfelt manner and empathetic nature sets the tone for our animal hospital. Coupled with her track record of over 22 years of veterinary medical excellence, she is sought out by many Staten Islanders to provide expert health care for their beloved pets.

Dr. Cavallaro has three cats: Peyton, Eli and Archie, and a golden retriever named Cooper. When not at Bay St. Animal Hospital, she enjoys Broadway theater, basketball, Zumba and traveling.

Robert B. Cohen VMD

Dr. Cohen is a graduate of the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and has been in practice for nearly 38 years. He was awarded the coveted AAHA Student Achievement award for his outstanding scholastic and clinical performance. He continued his post-graduate veterinary medical and surgical training at the world's largest animal hospital, the Animal Medical Center of New York (AMC). He eventually became the Head, Section of Cardiology and Director of Clinics at that world-class facility. After leaving the AMC, he created a high-tech innovative "computer based" cardiac and internal medicine consulting service for veterinarians that is world renowned.

He came to Staten Island in 1988 to develop several private practices, including Rosebank Veterinary Practice and South Shore Veterinary Practice. Drs. Cohen and Cavallaro blended their professional skills and personalities to create Staten Island's largest animal hospital. They relocated their practice to the new, larger and more advanced facility in 2002.

Margaret Banaskek-Lepkowski DMV

Malgorzata Banaszek-Lepkowski, D.V.M.

Senior Staff Veterinarian

Dr. Lepkowski is a graduate of Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. She was a member of the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates from 2005 to 2007. Dr. Lepkowski's special interests include feline medicine, general and advanced soft-tissue surgery, pain management and stem cell therapy. She has become one of the most respected veterinarians on Staten Island and continues to expand her role as a senior staff veterinarian. She is also in charge of our Intensive Care Unit.

Peter Donchik DMV

Dr. Donchik is a Brooklyn native who received a BS degree at Brooklyn College before entering The University of Parma (Italy), where he received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1984. He worked for 20 years as a Director of Bay Ridge Animal Hospital, which he left in late 2004 to join Bay St. Animal Hospital. "He is one of the most gifted veterinarians I have ever worked with," Dr. Cohen says. "He has brought a tremendous set of human qualities that make our practice function with even greater skill and heartfelt kindness."

Justine Candrilli DMV

Justine Candrilli, D.V.M.

Senior Staff Veterinarian

Dr. Candrilli graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in May 2016. She completed her clinical rotation at the University of Florida, where her interest in integrative medicine started.  Currently, Dr. Candrilli is enrolled at the Chi Institute of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine.  Upon completion, she will be incorporating acupuncture into her traditional veterinary practice as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA).  Dr. Candrilli’s interest in herbal medicine, laser therapy and rehabilitation are ways she integrates her western medicine knowledge in a holistic approach.
